Covid, Pregliasco: “Wave after Christmas, unpleasant decisions for New Year’s Eve”
The virologist Fabrizio Pregliasco raises the alarm on the increase in Covid cases that could occur immediately after Christmas, which is why, according to him, “unpleasant decisions” will be needed in view of the New Year to curb the wave of infections.
Speaking to Radio Cusano Campus, the expert said: “We have to worry, preparing ourselves for scenarios in consideration of what will happen at Christmas between parties, kisses and hugs, carelessness, risk habits”.
“This leads – continues the expert – to a wave that we must foresee and we must do it with a timing that allows us to act before the oxen flee from the stables. It will not be easy because the decisions that will have to be taken may be a bit unpleasant, especially for the effects they may have on the New Year ”.
“I do not think we will be able to reset, but to mitigate, to crush the curve, to ensure that it is not a peak, but a hill, which at least provides for a staggered arrival of cases in hospitals” declared Pregliasco.
The possibility of imposing new restrictive measures “is something that is not pleasant at the moment, the controversy will arise over the fact that the tourism and service sectors will lose a lot of money. So they will be difficult times because there is fatigue, there is the desire to go out ”.
On the Omicron variant, on the other hand, Pregliasco declares: “It seems quite clear that Omicron is much more contagious than the Delta. How far it can escape vaccines is to be confirmed. An Australian study says that with the third dose the protection returns to good levels, but we have to evaluate it step by step “.
Omicron, therefore, “worries, we still don’t have certainty. We must start from the assumption that Covid circulates and any interpersonal contact can be at risk, we must manage them in such a way as to ensure that there is no exaggeration. And then the vaccination which is what we have to do “.
