Still Covid cases are growing in Italy, while deaths are decreasing. In the week from 26 September to 2 October there were 13,073 new positive cases, an increase of 17% compared to the 11,164 in the period 19-25 September. New deaths instead fell from 112 to 85. The number of swabs performed rose to 95,017, almost 12% more than the 85,030 of the previous week. Slight increase in the positivity ratewhich goes from 13.1% to 13.8%. These are the data from the latest bulletin released online by the Ministry of Health.
School effect, Rt and incidence date back
The return to school seems to have had an impact on the curve of Covid cases. In the period 23-29 September, in Italy the incidence of diagnosed and reported cases was 21 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, an increase compared to the previous week (16-22 September, 16 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). The transmissibility index (Rt), calculated with data updated to 2 October and based on cases with hospitalization, as of 24 September was equal to 1.20 (1.12-1.28), an increase compared to the previous week, according to what is highlighted by the weekly Covid ISS-Ministry of Health monitoring. The age groups that record the highest weekly incidence rate are 80-89 and above 90 years.
On the variants front, “preliminary data relating to the month of September 2024 – we read – highlight the co-circulation of different sub-variants of JN.1 attracting attention at an international level, with a predominance of KP.3.1.1. Furthermore, it is growing , the proportion of sequences attributable to the recombinant XEC lineage”.
