This barrier was enough to curb the latest wave, together with green passes and masks and Anthony Fauci seems to confirm the validity of the model: “Israel, in terms of vaccines, is exactly where it should be”
Israel: one of the most vaccinated countries in the world; this is the vulgate that we have been used to hearing for months. But is it really so? The question is relevant especially today that in Italy and in Europe the possibility of compulsory vaccination is being discussed. Italy, together with Spain and Portugal, is part of that group of Mediterranean countries that have been able to extend immunization more among the inhabitants. In Italy, however, there is still a minority discovered by the vaccine, which is worrying, and could be reached by imposing the obligation as a last resort. But Israel also had to deal with a fourth wave of coronavirus this summer. She did this by speeding up with the third doses (and avoiding generalized closures). But is it really among the most vaccinated countries in the world? Looking at his numbers, we understand how he used a strategy that is partly different from that of the European states that have so far protected themselves better from contagion.
A few days ago, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said that we need to focus on third doses before vaccinating the entire population. To block the way for the virus, a more stringent green pass has also been activated: to obtain it, it takes the third dose six months after (and not nine) the end of the first cycle of vaccine, or proof of being cured or a negative swab . Compulsory vaccination is currently excluded, at least according to the words of Sharon Alroy-Preis, a senior official of the Ministry of Health. This despite the fact that the front of the anti vax is quite large. It is true that 45% of Israelis have taken the third dose, but it is also true that people who are fully vaccinated (at least two doses) only reach 64% of the inhabitants: a lower percentage than the Austrians (66%) and Germans. (68%) and much lower than the Italian, Spanish and Portuguese ones.
But this barrier was enough to curb the last wave, along with green passes and masks. The news from the hospitals is good: the inmates continue to descend. Anthony Fauci, the US government’s chief health advisor, also appears to confirm the validity of the Israeli model. Dr Fauci just stated that “Israel, when it comes to vaccines, is exactly where it should be.”
However, Covid is unpredictable, and a reassuring situation can quickly deteriorate. The Times of Israel newspaper points out that the RT index is back above 1, which means that the contagion, albeit slightly, is once again in an expansion phase. And most of the infected, health authorities inform, are unvaccinated people. In 50% of cases, these are children under 12 years of age. Precisely for this reason Israel has begun to vaccinate them (with Pfizer), the second country in the world after the United States. And he could soon be giving booster shots to teens who’ve been on the second dose for more than six months. The advisory committee on the pandemic advised it, but it takes the go-ahead from the Ministry of Health to get started.
Israeli authorities said in a press conference a few days ago that the booster dose is much more efficient than the first two in preventing infections and severe symptoms in the event of illness. Pfizer’s booster, according to preliminary data from Israeli research (not yet published), would be effective for 9-10 months and possibly even longer.
