The director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned, this Monday (7), that “the impact of the pandemic will be felt for decades”, especially “in the most vulnerable populations”. “The longer the pandemic drags on, the worse these impacts will be,” he anticipated.
“The devastating consequences” of the pandemic have worsened economic, social and access to health inequalities, a situation that has affected countries “of all sizes and incomes”, he explained, at a press conference within the framework of the signing of a memorandum between the WHO and the Commonwealth.
Nations have “to work together” to stop this scenario, according to the director-general of the WHO. The goal is to vaccinate at least 70% of the world’s population by mid-2022. With this vaccination coverage, “it would strengthen health systems and work towards an inclusive economic recovery.”
