No, Covid is not a distant memory, but it is alive and continues to circulate. In the last week the infections in our country have practically tripled: just last July 9th there were 1,390 new cases, today July 17th, there are 3,121. Fortunately, at the moment the load on our hospitals and intensive care units is infinitely less than a few months ago, when the risk threshold for the health system was largely exceeded.
Certainly thanks to the vaccination campaign, and to the fact that the weaker groups have been largely immunized. At this point in our battle against Covid, however, the worst risk would be to underestimate the surge in infections that has been taking place in recent days. As the experts explain, it is mainly young people who contract the virus and those who have not received the vaccine, or are immunized with a single dose, waiting for the booster. To cause this dangerous growth is undoubtedly the Delta variant, extremely contagious, which is joined by the recovery of sociality after the reopening of the past months.
Another element not to be underestimated is the fact that the number of new first doses is constantly decreasing. A sign that after having vaccinated almost all those who have convincedly lent their arm to science, it is now hard to convince and involve the most skeptical and those openly no-vax citizens. This is why this is not the time to let your guard down.
And now who explains it to us?
Thus many Regions risk greeting the white zone. But how is it possible that in so few days the contagion curve has grown exponentially? The feeling is also that the worst must come, given that the outbreaks that have occurred throughout Italy after the historic victory of the Europeans are not yet included in the calculation of these data.
Is the responsibility only for the diffusion of the Delta variant or should the policy also give explanations? New closures would be fatal for the social and economic stability of the country. For this reason, the parties are now rushing to introduce restrictions on the use of the Green pass, with high fines for those without it and for locals who will not respect the rules. Will it be enough? Macron in France for days has already launched more severe measures, which among other things have prompted many transalpines to get vaccinated. In Italy, on the other hand, discussions continue, with Salvini preaching calm and saying he is against the introduction of new straits. But in the meantime the infections continue to rise.
