Covid-19: the Delta variant is scary, but the new Epsilon variant is popping up, even more dangerous and capable of bypassing vaccines
While trying to convince skeptics of the usefulness of vaccinating to stem the effects of Delta variant, the new is emerging Epsilon variant, a form of the virus that has mutated to bypass both vaccine-generated and disease-generated antibodies.
There Epsilon variant technically it is called B.1.427 / B.1.429 and initially she was called “Californian”, based on the place where the first cases had occurred at the beginning of 2021. Only in March was it codified and, at the moment, there are only two cases recognized in Italy.
A recent article published in the prestigious scientific journal Science explains that the Epsilon variant it contains three mutations that make it resistant to antibodies and which are found on the Spike protein, the “claw” that the virus uses to enter cells.
Precisely by virtue of these characteristics, the Epsilon variant is resistant both to antibodies generated by messenger RNA vaccines and to those generated by SarsCoV2 virus infection.
