Carrying out preventive procedures and taking drugs for COVID-19 at a certain time will increase their effectiveness, Russian scientists believe. This is not about focusing on a specific hour, but about adjusting to individual circadian rhythms of a person. This is the conclusion reached by the specialists of the Tyumen State Medical University.
For example, earlier American scientists showed that a person’s internal biological clock influences the course of asthma. That is, the respiratory function of a person changes depending on the time of day. Several studies have shown that the number and activity of platelets and endothelial cells also change at different times. The parameters of blood coagulation depend on circadian rhythms, a change in which can lead to myocardial infarction, sudden cardiac death, thrombosis, intracerebral effusion and other pathologies.
The work of immune cells is also highly dependent on the time of day. Proteins that the body makes at certain times activate or suppress cytokines.
That is, the mediators of the most common complications in COVID-19 (vascular problems, cytokine storm) are largely regulated by circadian rhythms.
“Understanding how these rhythms correlate with the work of the immune system in a particular person would make it possible to carry out preventive procedures and give drugs with higher efficiency. In addition, in this way, doctors would know the time when complications are most likely to appear, ”the authors of the work noted.
