This Monday (27), the Ministry of Health released a note reaffirming its support for the application of vaccines against Covid-19 in children aged 5 to 11 years and that the campaign for this audience should start in January. The official calendar must be released after January 5th, the deadline for collecting data from the public consultation carried out by the folder.
“After hearing the society, the folder will formalize its decision and, maintaining the recommendation, the immunization of this age group should start in January”, explains the statement. With the decision, the immunization of children aged 5 to 11 years will be included in the National Plan for the Operationalization of Vaccination against Covid-19 (PNO).
The survey, released on Dec. 23, came after the ministry defended the requirement for a prescription to vaccinate children. The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) authorized on the 16th of this month the application of the Pfizer vaccine in this age group. Since then, Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga has said that there is no emergency to vaccinate this public.

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) demands a decision from the government. Last week, the ministry informed that the contract in force with Pfizer has deliveries scheduled for January 10th. Currently, Brazil has a forecast of 100 million doses in the third contract with the company.
The Extraordinary Secretariat for Combating Covid-19, of the Ministry of Health, prepared a technical note in which it reinforces the safety of the application of vaccines in children. “Before recommending Covid-19 vaccination for children, scientists carried out clinical trials with thousands of children and no serious safety concerns were identified,” wrote the chief of staff, Rosane Leite de Melo.
The demonstration goes against the recent speeches of the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro and the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, who call into question the safety of Pfizer’s immunizing agent in the age group from 5 to 11 years old. The note also reminds that the Pfizer product is also already applied abroad, in places like the United States and Europe.
On December 19, at a ceremony held by Caixa Econômica Federal, the president of the Republic stated that childhood immunization is “very serious” and defended measures that could hinder access to the vaccine, such as the presentation of a medical prescription. “Children are very serious things. The possible future adverse effects are not known,” said Bolsonaro.
The Council of State Health Secretaries (Conass), however, has already stated that it will not charge the prescription to apply doses in this age group. Experts point out that the requirement would delay vaccination and hinder access to protection, especially for the most vulnerable families.
