The #VacinaMaré Campaign started a new stage this Thursday morning (14) with the objective of completing by Saturday (16) the vaccination of all adults in the favela complex, which has more than 100,000 inhabitants and is located in the area north of Rio de Janeiro. The project brings together the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), the non-governmental organization (NGO) Redes da Maré and the Municipal Health Department of Rio de Janeiro.
In addition to applying the second dose to the adult population, the campaign will seek to immunize adolescents aged 12 years and over who have not yet received the first dose of vaccines against covid-19. The first stage of #VacinaMaré immunized 37,000 people, above the 34,000 that were initially expected. At the current stage, the goal is to complete the immunization of the same 37,000 and more than 4,000 residents who have their second dose late.
The orientation of the campaign organizers is that the population of Maré attend family clinics and residents’ associations that will form the network of vaccination points from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. All adults who have taken the first dose for at least eight weeks will be able to receive the second dose, regardless of the date set for it in the vaccination booklet.
According to Fiocruz, as a result of the mass vaccination previously carried out with the first dose, Maré has 96% of the adult population with at least one dose. Data from the communities in the complex are monitored by the foundation, which is leading two studies in the territory. According to Fiocruz, Maré has lower lethality than the average for the municipality of Rio.
The researchers are monitoring the effects of the vaccine in 2,000 families in Maré, which represents a universe of 8,000 people. During vaccination, new volunteers will be able to apply to participate in the monitoring.
According to Fiocruz, two simultaneous studies are ongoing: one that will measure the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine and another that will monitor the circulation of covid-19 variants among residents, the occurrence of cases among vaccinated people, possible adverse effects of the vaccine and the level of protection for unvaccinated children and adolescents.
