Initiative of the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Sciences (ICMC) of the University of São Paulo (USP) the Distance Course in Tutor-Student Couples: Practices in smartphones and tablets for Seniors teaches seniors to use digital devices. Classes are aimed at those who have little or no experience with the devices and should be taught with the help of a tutor, that is, someone from the family or a colleague who can help the elderly to enter classes and stay together during learning.
The pairs must be formed by a participant with at least 60 years old (elderly) and one at least 18 years old (tutor). The two must have a smartphone from the same manufacturer and with system Android version 8.0 or higher.
The aim of the course is to familiarize the elderly with the use of smartphones and carry out practices that support students to develop the skills and abilities needed to use the devices. The course, which is free, will be entirely remote.
Registration starts on the 18th and ends on the 20th of August and can be made by this form.
Classes will be held on Wednesdays, from 7 pm to 9 pm, through a platform online to be released later. 60 places will be offered. Classes start on August 25th and end on December 15th.
Students will learn touch interaction practices integrated with basic applications common to devices Android (phone and contact list, camera and photo gallery), as well as for the development of skills and competences for mastering settings (font size, bedtime settings, wireless network connection and data network). There will be communication Apps practice: Google Meet, Whatsapp/Signal/Telegram and Instagram.
There will also be Entertainment Apps practice: Google Search, Google Play, YouTube, Spotify, Games and Service Applications Practice: iFood, Uber Eats. More information about the course at link
Already an elderly person who has some knowledge and is able to use the smartphone can enroll in the course Practices with Tablets and Cell Phones – Advanced Module – Distance Learning Course. The goal is to offer digital literacy to the elderly public by teaching the configurations of smartphones and apps that emerged or were widely used during the period of social distancing, such as iFood, Spotify and zoom, between others.
20 places are offered for this course. Classes take place every Wednesday from 2 pm to 4 pm. The course starts on September 1st and ends on December 8th. online.
Concepts on mobile devices will be discussed: interaction (touches, gestures), navigation and applications, and practices carried out with applications of interest to the target audience that allow, for example, making phone calls and sending messages, creating and managing contacts, alarms, diaries, photos, music, videos, news, email and games.
