After the summer break of the Formula 1 world championship, the championship resumed with two consecutive GPs in Belgium and the Netherlands, all in anticipation of the third scheduled for this weekend in Italy. In the tests held so far, the authentic protagonist has revealed himself Max Verstappenauthor of surprising performances: while in Spa-Francorchamps he recovered quickly from the rear to the command of the standings, dominating up to the checkered flag, in Zandvoort the victory materialized directly from pole position, sending the public into raptures compatriot.
Now, with 109 points clear of Charles Leclerc in the championship standings with seven races to go, the Red Bull Dutchman is getting closer and closer to winning a second consecutive title. Performance and numbers that inevitably make him one of the greatest talents of 21st century Formula 1, even if the consideration of David Coulthard it is quite different.
The Scotsman, now engaged in the role of television commentator, believes that the conditions are already in place for Verstappen to be considered much more than an excellent driver: “If you look at last year and how he took the title, it can be said that it is a phenomenonan exceptional driver, a legend – admitted to Viaplay – from the moment he entered the sport, he arrived as a Senna, a Schumacher or a Hamilton: he arrived ready to win, not as a rookie who is learning everything. I know I attribute a lot to him, as he’s only 24, but he’s an exceptional driver. I’ve never been, but I appreciate hard work and success. Max is a person who has a whole country at his feet: no matter how many titles he wins, he’s already one of the biggest“.
On top of that, Coulthard is also convinced that Verstappen can beat the record of the highest number of victories in a season. At present, this record is shared by Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel, who reached this milestone in 2004 and 2013 respectively with 13 wins each, while the Dutch Red Bull is at 10: “I think it can beat him – added the former Williams and McLaren driver – Red Bull’s pace is very good, and Mattia Binotto is worried about Ferrari’s lack of pace. Thus, Max can get 13 wins. He doesn’t even need them for the championship, but they watch race by race and they want those victories ”.
