The shocking announcement of the price Of PS5 Pro has scared several users not so much for the cost of the new mid-gen model from Sony, but rather for the future perspective that this could indicate, namely the fact that it represents a precedent from which to start to establish the price of PS6. Ultimately, the cost of the PS5 Pro is a relative issue: the new model is an alternative to a base that is already well-established and perfectly functional, and is practically already in the homes of many users, so its proposal is absolutely optional, but the transition to a new generation is a completely different matter. The PS6 will not be an accessory choice, but will represent the platform to absolutely buy for many gamers, who are starting to wonder how much they will have to shell out to simply keep up with the times.
According to the well-known analyst Mat Piscatella of Circana and Rhys Elliot of Media Researchthe price of PS5 Pro is a fundamental precedent, which could represent the new basis from which to start to establish the price of the next-generation consoles, both PS6 and the next Xbox. The increase in prices on these products must be taken into account, according to Piscatella, as it derives from several factors: the maturity reached by the market, or the fact that the potential audience is no longer expanding and the frequency of spending is relatively static. This means that, with the same number of consoles sold, it is likely that manufacturers will aim for a higher price to increase revenues as they can no longer count on a greater quantity of consoles sold from generation to generation. For these reasons, according to Piscatella, it is to be expected that the prices of the new consoles will continue to increase.
Analysts predict console prices will rise
Elliot expects the PS6 and next Xbox to cost “at least $600” (while the PS5 Pro costs $699 in the US), but says “PlayStation is clearly testing the waters with its price of PS5 Pro”, as reported to GamesRadar, and the results of this (which according to several estimates should eventually settle in line with those of PS4 Pro compared to the standard PS4) could give further indications to the company on how to behave with the next console as well.
The widespread idea among analysts is that the PS5 Pro is not destined to be an isolated case in terms of price, then. In fact, while offering a “Pro” product at a high price also makes sense, in terms of merchandise, it would become rather complicated to justify the launch of a new generation machine, presumably a couple of years later, at a lower launch price.
A PS5 Pro that costs more than a PS6 (because the current generation has taught us to no longer hope for progressive price drops as a standard, indeed the strange opposite situation has come true) would be a paradox, which leads us to think that the next console could cost the same, if not more. One possibility that could lead to a possible price reduction could be the failure of the PS5 Pro, also based on the sales prospects established by Sony, which will likely be commensurate with those of the PS4 Pro. The company has already found itself hitting a significant wall when it launched the PS3 at $599, so a correction on the fly would not even be an unprecedented situation. Another idea could be the launch of different models placed at different prices, i.e. a situation similar to the current Xbox Series X and Series S: something that would be rather curious, considering the controversy that the smallest of Microsoft’s houses has recently unleashed in the gaming landscape.
