After the debate on Mediaset’s choices, for which there was talk of a possible downsizing of the news sector, also Rai are discussing the possible cuts to regional news programs, which have already sparked controversy in Parliament. Affaritaliani.it has launched a comparison between some of the most brilliant communication experts, from Carlo Freccero to Edoardo Fleischner, which is now enriched by the precious contribution of Maurizio Costanzo. During a career that began at a very young age, in the 1950s, he really wrote the history of information and in particular of television, of which he is still a point of reference with his legendary “Maurizio Costanzo Show”, the longest running talk show on Italian TV.
Do you believe that these discussions on the cuts to television news reveal the existence of an underlying problem?
“No, I don’t think there is this problem. On the other hand, I think that every ad who arrives at Rai must show his intervention in downsizing something. In this case it was the regional news, which however seems unfair to me, because the local news is as good as that of New York. I also want to know if the neighbor has slipped down the stairs or not. I point out that this is a recurring process: from time to time I hear such things about television news, but they are indeed transitory cycles ”.
Another thing that has been rumored lately is that there is a certain talk-show crisis. What do you think of it? Maybe there are too many now?
“Bravo, that’s the problem. If Rete 4 rightly makes a daily streak of political talks, it is clear that in total they become too many. Personally, I love the talk and I watch both Mario Giordano and Paolo Del Debbio on Mediaset, as well as Corrado Formigli on La7 and Bianca Berlinguer on Rai. But there is a precise reason for the proliferation of these programs: politics is more interesting than before and hearing about people talking about it on TV is certainly easier than reading articles explaining the scenario. This strongly makes the difference “.
You’ve named some of the top hosts of political talk shows, but which do you think is the absolute best, if not your designated heir?
“Giovanni Floris, presenter of“ Dimartedì ”on La7. It is persuasive, but then it also knows how to ‘throw the blow’ when it is the case. I also like Del Debbio and Berlinguer, but if I have to choose one, I certainly say Floris ”.
On the other hand, a media that appears to be in excellent health is radio. She too has been doing it constantly for years and just this year she started a new experience with the conduct of “Let’s pretend that …” on Radio 101. How come the radio is back in vogue with this strength and what balance does this new adventure?
“The balance is excellent, but as you know, I started with the radio, in 1970, with ‘Good afternoon’ on Radio Rai. An important piece of my life is linked to the radio, so it’s a bit like leafing through a scrapbook ”.
Speaking of memories, unfortunately Paolo Pietrangeli, director of the “Maurizio Costanzo Show” for many years, passed away recently: what is your memory?
“Damn, it’s thirty years of life… The memory is that of a certainty in directing and, luckily, the person who was the first cameraman and the assistant director then took his place when Paolo left, guaranteeing continuity. But it’s still a piece of life that goes away… “.
Since last summer you have also been Rome’s advisor for communication, a role in which passion and professionalism are mixed. And I guess working with an exceptional media character with Josè Mourinho is really fun and stimulating, right?
“He’s not wrong: even though I don’t have anything to do with him very often, I respect him a lot. I have rarely seen people with clearer ideas than his and who know their profession as well as he does. And Roma’s fifth place in the standings clearly testifies to this ”.
Where can Roma go this year?
“This year I don’t know, but Mourinho has a three-year contract and I count a lot on the third year. To get where? To the Scudetto, right ?! ”.
