Coronavirus THL: 1.5 million doses of coronary vaccine in stock, new orders may be discontinued soon

It is not yet possible to say exactly when the orders will be closed, as the decision depends on, among other things, the enthusiasm for vaccination, says Mia Kontio, THL’s leading expert.

Finland is very soon in a situation where orders for coronary vaccines can be terminated, says a leading expert from the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) Mia Kontio.

According to Kontio, the quantities of coronary vaccines ordered by Finland are sufficient, as long as Modern’s Spikevax vaccine is used in adult booster doses.

“Last week, there were 1.5 million servings in stock. In addition, about 300,000 new doses were received during the week, ”says Kontio.

The number of vaccinations given during the week has not been deducted. Spikevax vaccines have been included in half, as THL has ruled out the use of booster halves. Two-thirds of the vaccine doses in Finland are Spikevax.

Exact It is not yet possible to say how long the order will be terminated, as the decision will depend, among other things, on the enthusiasm for vaccination and whether Finland will start preparing for vaccinations next autumn, for example by freezing vaccines.

Uncertainty about the future is created by the fact that it is not yet certain how the vaccines in use work against their own micron transformation, ie whether the vaccines need to be modified. The drug manufacturers estimate that it would take about three months to process.

“Some EU countries have bought almost ten times the amount of corona vaccines for their populations. Finland has not done so, ”says Kontio.

According to him, Finland’s solution is good insofar as there are no vaccines left in Finland. However, if additional vaccines occur, they will be donated through the Covax program.

Finland decided last week both to offer coronary vaccines to at-risk children aged 5 to 11 and to recommend a third dose 5 to 6 months after the second dose for all 18-year-olds.

Vaccines for children come to Finland in the middle of the week, ie in the middle of December, in about 162,000 doses. Additional doses will be available in early January. Comirnat is given to 5 to 11-year-olds at the same dose interval as to adults, ie every 6 to 12 weeks. The dose is lower, 10 micrograms.

European Medicines Agency recommended extending the use of the vaccine to children on 25 November. On the same day, the European Commission granted a marketing authorization for the pediatric product.

Finland order the doses of Spikevax and Pfizer and Biontech Comirnaty separately.

In the case of Spikevax, the number of doses ordered by Finland will be fulfilled by the end of the year, ie there will be a break in delivery, Kontio says. The next doses will arrive in March-April.

In the case of Comirnaty, Finland will announce the amount it needs on a weekly basis from the beginning of next year. The weekly dose levels have been approximately 200,000 doses. Vaccine doses can be for either children or adults.

“The number of doses ordered for week 50 is the maximum. There will be no adult rations for that week, ”says Kontio.
