The pandemic wave, driven by the Omicron variant, has not yet peaked. Yesterday the new infections were 170,844 and the deaths 259 (here the bulletin of January 4): hospitals are starting to show signs of trouble, due to increasing hospitalizations due to the virus, but also due to the high number of doctors in isolation or suspended because they are not vaccinated. The vaccination campaign, meanwhile, continues: 86.07% of the population over 12 completely vaccinated and 401,532 children have already received at least one dose (10.8%; data updated at 07:06 today). To contain the advance of the virus and its impact on the economy, the government intends to launch a new package of measures: the extension of the obligation to have a reinforced green pass at least to those over 60 and to some categories is also under consideration of workers and the green light to the third dose for those over 12, as well as new rules for smart working. Today a confrontation is expected with the presidents of the Region at the end of which the government could enact the new rules.
07.45 am – In Rio de Janeiro skip the carnival (for the second time)
For the second year following the Rio de Janeiro Carnival in Brazil was canceled due to the covid-19 pandemic. Mayor Eduardo Paes announced the decision on social media after meeting with representatives of the groups that organize the Carnival. More than three million people celebrated for four days on the streets of Rio in 2020, the last time the Carnival was held. According to the mayor, it is unthinkable to be able to organize the event again taking into account the anti-contagion restrictions.
07.21 am – The situation in China: 1.71 million people in lockdown due to the zero Covid policy
The Chinese authorities have partially locked down the city of Zhengzhou, in the central province of Henan, and today ordered its 12 million inhabitants to undergo an anti-Covid test after the discovery of 11 cases of contagion in recent days. Beijing is thus continuing its path towards the Winter Olympics following the strict zero-Covd policy, which yesterday prompted the authorities to lock down about 1.17 million people, i.e. the entire population of the city of Yuzhou, always in Henan, after the discovery of three cases of contagion. Meanwhile, daily infections continue to decrease in the historic city of Xi’an, which has been in lockdown for 15 days, where public officials said the outbreak was brought under control.
