Hospital staff are at the forefront of the fight against the coronavirus. In Lyon (Rhône), an intensive care unit is forced to adapt every day because the situation is changing daily. A 36-year-old young man has just arrived in their service, the victim of a serious form of the virus. His condition requires heavy equipment and is slowly improving. However, doctors don’t just use invasive methods to treat patients.
Indeed, the medical staff learned many lessons from the first wave and sometimes use less cumbersome methods. Thus, an 85-year-old patient, who is fully conscious, is treated with oxygen therapy. “Intubate wisely and only intubate patients who need it because it is known that once intubated, the length of stay is extended“, considers Laurent Argaud, the head of the intensive care unit at the Édouard-Herriot Hospital, in Lyon.
