Coronavirus Pregnancy increases the risk of serious coronavirus infection, but pregnant women are not defined as a risk group – THL’s Nohynek explains why

Pregnant women are compared to women of the same age when they have received two doses of the vaccine.

Pregnancy increases the risk of developing serious coronavirus disease, and deltavirus has been shown to cause more serious illness in pregnant women than in other women of the same age.

This has been stated by, among others, the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). However, it has not defined pregnant women as a risk group for serious coronavirus disease for which, for example, third-party vaccines would be recommended.

Why this is the case and whether the definition should be changed, THL’s chief physician Hanna Nohynek?

“At the moment, it has not been considered appropriate to start changing risk groups. When pregnant women receive two doses of the vaccine, they are immune compared to other women of the same age, ”she says.

Even nohynek according to especially those in the late stages of pregnancy are somewhat more susceptible to severe disease.

However, when considering third-line vaccines, it is more relevant to assess the maintenance of vaccination protection.

In medical risk groups and the elderly, protection deteriorates more rapidly. This is not known to be observed in pregnant women.

“Of course, time will tell how long vaccine protection will last in a healthy young adult.”

Thus, the vaccine is not less effective in pregnant women, and the risk of infection is not higher, but when infected, a pregnant woman is more likely to develop severe symptoms than other healthy adults.

In Finland severe coronavirus infections in unvaccinated pregnant women have led to intensive care for several mothers and newborns.

About it has expressed concern for example, the Finnish Perinatological Society, which includes obstetricians and midwives.

Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District (Hus) was reported in early Octoberthat the delta modification has increased the number of pregnant women in intensive care.

The number of premature births has also increased. According to Hus, the women in these cases have been largely unvaccinated.

Even research according to coronary infection during pregnancy increases the risk of preterm birth and other pregnancy complications. It also increases the risk of the newborn getting into ward care.

According to Nohynek, the risk of severe symptoms increases if the expectant mother has other factors predisposing to severe coronavirus infection, such as significant overweight.

Pregnancy also increases the risk of vascular thrombosis, and coronary heart disease further increases the risk of thrombosis.

For example From the United States has been toldthat only about a third of pregnant women have taken the coronary vaccine.

It is difficult to get similar information about Finland, says Nohynek. The information is only entered into the register after the child has been born.

“This is a clear shortcoming in our monitoring system,” Nohynek admits.

Especially earlier this year, many pregnant women hesitated to take the vaccine, and According to the HS survey pregnancy is still part of the reason for non-vaccination.

Information on the suitability of vaccinations for pregnant women has been refined in recent months. Since August, THL has recommended coronavirus vaccination for all pregnant women.
