Coronavirus Finnish research: Third dose of coronary vaccine provides good protection for working age against omicron transformation

An as yet peer-reviewed study looked at the immune responses of 328 health care workers. Antibodies neutralizing omicron and delta variants were tested in 59 of the participants.

Finnish the study found that a third dose of coronavirus vaccine also gives a working-age person a good immune response against omicron conversion.

“It is important that after the third dose of the vaccine, immune protection develops. It is assumed that it also provides protection against infection and, of course, against serious disease, ”says the professor of virology at the University of Turku. Ilkka Julkunen.

He is one of the authors of a recent study. The research is joint between the University of Turku and the University of Helsinki. The study has been submitted for publication and is still peer-reviewed.

Immune response were studied in 328 health care workers aged 20–67 years. Subjects received two doses of Pfizer and Biontech’s Comirnaty vaccine, Modernan Spikevax, or Asta Zeneca’s Vaxzevria. Some received one dose of Vaxzevria, followed by one of the first two.

Of those who participated, 120 had received their first doses at short intervals. Thus, they already received their third dose of the vaccine, Comirnatya or Spikevax, during the study. Of these participants, 59 were tested for antibodies neutralizing omicron and delta transformations.

Twelve participants had confirmed coronary infection before the start of the study. These participants also received vaccinations.

The immune response of both the two and three doses was examined three weeks after the last vaccination.

“Based on the study, all combinations create a good immune response in the working age population,” says Julkunen.

Research According to Julkunen, the message is that there is no need to fear that the vaccine will not protect.

“It is true that the immune response to omicron has been weakened and the vaccinee can be infected, but the probability is always lower than in the unvaccinated. In addition, those in hospital and intensive care are largely unvaccinated. ”

Of the 328 participants in the study, two became infected through vaccinations. During the study period, alpha and delta variants circulated primarily in Finland.

“Based on that, the protective effect of the vaccine is absolutely excellent. This also shows that protection in hospitals has been good. ”

Omicron conversion is now being studied extensively. On Wednesday, the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) also announced the results of its recent study. The study showed that Spikevax produced a stronger immune response than Comirnaty, especially in the elderly.

Omicron conversion known to be contagious. It can also evade the protection afforded by a previous illness. However, according to Julkanen, there is no evidence that the variant would cause significant serious infections in those who were twice vaccinated.

Two British studies released on Wednesday show that self-infectious infections require less hospitalization than delta-caused infections. The results have been described as good news.

It is still unclear whether the observed reduction in severe infections with omicron is due to the characteristics of the variant or whether, for example, the population is more resistant due to previous infections and vaccinations.

“British research is certainly more applicable to European countries than research conducted in South Africa,” says Julkunen.

In South Africa, the age structure is young, there is a lot of protection from illness and vaccination coverage is lower. Compared to Finland, a larger part of the population in Britain has been infected and there are considerably more people who have been vaccinated three times.

“If it is reported in Britain that, in their view, omicron causes a milder disease on average, it must be believed.”
