Since October 30, the day of the reconfinement, the ceremonies in the basilica of La Chapelle-Montligeon (Orne) have been held behind closed doors. But, a few days earlier, the sanctuary still welcomed 180 faithful housed in an annex building for a three-day spiritual retreat. The rally went awry: 35 people caught the coronavirus, four are still hospitalized and one has died.
One of the participants cannot explain this contamination; however, he is a doctor. “There was no manual or physical contact; we always stayed away from each other”, assures Dr. Étienne Gaisne. In a statement, the organizers say that “the sanctuary respected the legal framework in force at the time”. Before the reconfinement, the Catholic faithful were free to meet in a private setting without reporting to the authorities.
