Never before have so many cars been towed away as in 2022, this is mainly due to the many corona barrels.
During the pandemic, no one thought it was a good idea to stand (or sit) on a crowded train while coughing. Rightly so, of course, which is why many people bought a cheap second-hand car to go with it. And we noticed that in 2022.
Corona barrels cause breakdowns
For the first time, the Dutch salvage companies had to turn out more than 100,000 times to move a stranded car. A total of 177,000 orders were given to tow a car. That is an absolute record, because this is 15% more than in 2021.
The explanation for this increase is logical. According to figures from the Stichting Incident Management Nederland (SIMN) these are exceptional numbers and may be explained by the fact that many people have bought a car as well. Board member Ivo Wildenberg says that these cars were apparently not as reliable as buyers thought. The Road Guard also noticed this. In 2022 they had a ‘good’ year. With 1.3 roadside assistance requests, it was busier than the year before. People do realize that they are driving an old car and therefore take out an ANWB membership more often. The service now has over 5 million members!
Remarkably yes. Because the old cars were in the Netherlands anyway. At least, a lot. Maybe some are imported, but the majority are probably just Dutch cars. These might have gone to scrap sooner without the pandemic.
records
The recovery companies must do their job safely. It also crashes every now and then. In 2022, 7,000 calls had to be made to protect the recovery companies (closing the road, alerting cars to a stationary car, etc.).
We throw in some more figures: the number of accidents also rose. The recovery companies handled almost 24,000. However, this is not a record. In 2017 and 2019 there were 3,000 more. Still good news though. Kind of…
