Corona also polarizes violently in the fourth wave. On Twitter, virologist Christian Drosten has a battle of words with an FDP politician. It’s about the intensive care beds in Germany.
Munich / Berlin – The coronavirus pandemic gets down to business. That has long been known. While the number of corona infections is skyrocketing in Germany, the debate about booster vaccinations and corona rules (measures) is no less rapid. Christian Drosten, head of the Virology Department at the Charité Berlin, also caused a stir – with a comment on Twitter.
Coronavirus pandemic in Germany: Christian Drosten moderates FDP politicians on Twitter
That happened: The WDR news program “WDR aktuell” shared a post on Twitter in which the North Rhine-Westphalian FDP politician Joachim Stamp is quoted: “I also don’t understand why they allowed so many places to be on Intensiv have ceased to exist. ” German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) responded to the corona crisis management of the NRW state government. The 51-year-old is himself part of the administration in Düsseldorf. Specifically: Stamp is Family Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in North Rhine-Westphalia.
When his FDP was criticized for their corona policy in the answers under the WDR posting, Stamp was apparently enough. Conversely, he replied to a Twitter user sharply: “Facts on: look at the numbers on infection and lethality in the three FDP-co-governed states of Schleswig-Holstein, Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia and then just shut up,” he wrote.
Christian Drosten: Virologist criticizes FDP politicians on Twitter for statements about intensive care beds
That, in turn, brought Drosten onto the scene. The scientist also criticized clearly in a comment – however, the doctor was probably interested in Stamp’s choice of words. “With this tonality, a limit is exceeded, not only in the dialogue with science and health care,” said Drosten unequivocally. Stamp didn’t leave it like that.
The FDP man replied immediately and diplomatically: “We all know that we can only get through this difficult phase with a concerted effort. The situation is serious. But precisely for this reason it should not be used for blanket bashing against a democratic party ”, he explained and said that he probably reacted“ too rustic ”.

The brief battle of words did not go unnoticed on Twitter. The Bavarian actor Marcus Mittermeier (including “Munich Murder”) shared a screenshot and wrote about it: “0: 1 @c_drosten”. He presumably meant that it was 1-0 in the debate for the virologist from the capital. Striking: Only in the past few days had ZDF broadcast the much-noticed drama “The world stands still” about the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
One of the main roles can be seen: Marcus Mittermeier. His colleague Natalia Wörner, the friend of the executive foreign minister Heiko Maas (SPD), had actually played the main role. And recently attacked unvaccinated actor colleagues violently, they would “not shoot with them”. The debate remains heated. Around Drosten. And in many other areas of public life in Germany. (pm)
