B.Before the World Cup qualifier against Montenegro, ondscoach Louis van Gaal criticized the partial lockdown ordered by the Dutch government after the rising corona numbers. The coach regrets that Oranje has to play the last qualifying game against Norway in Rotterdam on Tuesday (8.45 p.m. at DAZN) without a spectator. The government decision was “illogical”, said van Gaal.
From Saturday until at least December 4th, no spectators have been admitted to sports competitions in the Netherlands. All 44,000 tickets had been sold for the game at De Kuip Stadium. “No matter how painful it is, the Netherlands against Norway will be played without spectators,” said Executive Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
Van Gaal understands “that Corona is more important than football, but I don’t understand these measures when there are few infected people. I live in Portugal and there, unlike in the Netherlands, they control properly. There, 98 percent are vaccinated and the hospital beds are not fully occupied. It’s about leadership skills. Mr. Rutte is the manager here, you can expect something, ”said van Gaal.
The 70-year-old regretted the lack of support in the stadium, with the audience behind you, you could “always do a little more”. “Let’s say we win against Norway. Then we are qualified for the World Cup. This beautiful moment then disappears in the stadium, also for the players. That’s sad. I think it’s a shame, ”he said.
The Dutch football association KNVB had previously been critical of the government’s decisions. “It is more than frustrating to see that the government does not seem to be looking at the sources of the infection. These are not in the stadiums. This has been proven several times. It looks like political poverty. They no longer know what they are doing in The Hague, ”the association wrote in a statement.
