D.he seven-day incidence in Germany increased for the sixth day in a row. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Tuesday morning as 75.1. For comparison: the previous day the value was 74.4, a week ago it was 65.8, in the previous month it was 70.5. The health authorities in Germany reported 6771 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is evident from the numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 4.18 a.m. A week ago the value was 4971 infections.
According to the new information, 88 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours – exactly as many as a week ago. The RKI has counted 4,384,616 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.
The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions – was given by the RKI on Monday as 1.92 (Friday 2.02). A nationwide threshold value from when the situation can be viewed critically is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.
The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 4,164,600. The number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection rose to 94,716.
Parents want to prevent school closings
In view of the increasing number of infections, parent representatives and patient advocates are calling for stricter corona measures in the autumn and winter months. Ines Weber, board member of the Federal Parents’ Council, demanded that teachers be vaccinated. This would have to be “legally stipulated nationwide” by the federal government, she told the newspapers of the Funke media group. The quarantine of entire class groups or even school closings must be prevented.
The Association of Education and Upbringing had rejected calls for teachers to be vaccinated months ago. Union leader Udo Beckmann pointed out in July that the occupational group had been vaccinated by an overwhelming majority, with the vaccination quota being 90 percent in some cases. The federal government also rejects vaccination requirements.
Such an obligation is possible in Germany, but rarely. Since March 2020, proof of immunization against measles has been mandatory for children when they are admitted to daycare centers and schools. This also applies to teachers and educators. According to the Infection Protection Act, the Federal Ministry of Health can order “that threatened parts of the population” have to take part in protective vaccinations.
The board of directors of the German Foundation for Patient Protection, Eugen Brysch, spoke out in favor of expanding mandatory testing in clinics and nursing homes. The corona tests would have to be ordered by politicians nationwide on a daily basis for hospitals and nursing homes – “regardless of whether the person has been vaccinated or recovered,” said Brysch to the Funke newspapers.
Doctors warn of respiratory diseases
The president of the professional association of paediatricians, Thomas Fischbach, has spoken out in favor of abolishing the regular corona tests in schools. “We no longer need the cause-free corona mass tests in schools,” Fischbach told the Bild newspaper. Because children rarely became seriously ill with Covid-19.
“What is really worrying us at the moment: The children’s wards are full of very young patients who suffer from respiratory diseases caused by the RSV,” said Fischbach. Corona cases are the exception. The huge logistical effort of the quick tests is not worthwhile and often leads to incorrect results.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) recently reported a sharp increase in hospital admissions for infections with the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in one to four year olds. This infection of the upper respiratory tract can be particularly dangerous for premature babies and previously ill children in the first year of life.
