In 2020, more people died than would have been expected under normal conditions, say the statisticians. The reason for the increase is clear.
Wiesbaden – The corona pandemic has led to excess mortality in Germany – the Federal Statistical Office came to this conclusion after evaluating the death statistics since the beginning of the pandemic.
“From March 2020 to mid-November 2021, more people died in Germany than would have been expected taking into account the demographic development,” said the Office’s Vice President, Christoph Unger, on Thursday in Wiesbaden.
In 2020, five percent more people died than in 2019. Due to the aging of the population alone, an increase in the number of deaths of only two percent would have been expected. If you look at the first twelve months of the pandemic – March 2020 to February 2021 – 7.5 percent more people died than in the same period of the previous year.
The cause of death statistics provide information on who reported and who died with Corona in 2020. According to Destatis, almost 40,000 people died of Covid-19 as a basic disease, in a good 8,000 Covid-19 was recorded as a concomitant disease on the death certificate. 70 percent of the Covid 19 deaths were 80 years or older, most of them had a variety of previous illnesses. 176,000 people were treated in hospital with or because of Corona in 2020. Almost 37,000 of them were in the intensive care unit, around 21,000 were artificially ventilated. Every sixth Covid-19 case in the hospital was fatal. dpa
