Germany is struggling with the fourth corona wave. The virologist Streeck emphasizes the importance of booster vaccinations, but other things are more important.
Bonn – The fourth corona wave is rolling. The health authorities in Germany are recording more new infections with the corona virus than they have been for a long time. The nationwide seven-day incidence has risen, and intensive care units in hospitals are filling up.
Corona situation in Germany: Virologist Streeck calls for more than just booster vaccinations
The managing health minister Jens Spahn and RKI president Lothar Wieler once again made it clear at a press conference on Wednesday (November 3rd, 2021) how serious the situation is. Wieler spoke of “terrifying” corona deaths in Germany and warned that the pandemic will “bring a lot of suffering again” if countermeasures are not taken.
Spahn called for more speed with booster vaccinations. The federal states should write to all people over the age of 60 and refer to the booster vaccination.
Streeck: “Free corona tests got us through the last autumn and winter well”
The virologist Hendrik Streeck also considers this approach to be sensible. Booster vaccinations are “useful for people over the age of 70 or those who have a previous illness,” said Streeck the news channel n-tv. The over 60-year-olds had to be reached “through targeted addressing”.
The virologist also made it clear that boosters would not close the vaccination gap. “The most important resource we have is vaccination. The more people we can get to be vaccinated, the less Covid-19 we will have in the intensive care units, ”said Streeck.
Swap 3G for 2G? A purely political decision for Streeck
The 44-year-old was critical of an expansion of 2G. Finally, there are also transmissions among vaccinated people. And vaccinated people could also pass the corona virus on. In this context, Streeck said that the appearance was created that it was just a “pandemic of the unvaccinated”. “And that’s not right, we are all part of the pandemic,” he said. Bavaria has already tightened the corona rules due to very high incidences.
The virologist also regrets that free corona tests are no longer available nationwide. With free tests, which “got us through the last autumn and winter”, one could keep a good overview of the infection situation in Germany, explained Streeck n-tv. Saxony is struggling with high numbers of corona infections. The state therefore imposed a quasi-lockdown for unvaccinated people.
