The World Economic Forum in Davos falls victim to Omikron. The planners of the Munich Security Conference want to avoid something similar, as Merkur.de learned.
Munich – The Munich Security Conference (MSC) is to take place as a face-to-face event despite the exacerbated pandemic situation and the rapid spread of the Omikron variant. “We are planning a physical conference at the usual venue in the Hotel Bayerischer Hof,” said an MSC spokeswoman on Monday at the request of Merkur.de.
But you are aware that you have to reduce the number of guests and media representatives. “We will see everything else in the next few weeks,” it said. In 2022, the leadership of the Munich Security Conference will be transferred from the long-time Siko boss Wolfgang Ischinger to the former UN ambassador Christoph Heusgen – but the change will only take place after the conference.
Siko in Munich: meeting should take place – under “strictest hygiene measures”
According to current plans, the 58th Munich Security Conference will take place from February 18 to 20. In order to keep the risk of infection as low as possible, however, “the strictest hygiene measures are planned”, the organizing Munich Security Conference Foundation announced when the concept was presented at the end of October. In addition, digital formats are planned.
At the Munich Security Conference, politicians, the military and other experts from all over the world have been discussing security issues on a regular basis since 1963. Last February, Siko took place as a purely virtual format. Appearances by switch, among others by US President Joe Biden and the then Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), nevertheless met with great public interest.
It was only on Monday that the organizers postponed the World Economic Forum in Davos, scheduled for mid-January, because of the corona pandemic. The meeting of the global political and business elite is now to be rescheduled for the spring. (utz / fn)
