With a new professional association, the treatment of corona long-term effects is to be improved.
Heiligendamm / Berlin – The treatment of corona long-term effects is to be improved with a new professional association. For patients who are struggling with severe impairments after an actually mild course of the disease, there is “still no drug-based causal therapy approach,” said the co-initiator and chief physician of the Median Rehabilitation Clinic Heiligendamm, Jördis Frommhold, of the German Press Agency. That is why she believes a stronger interdisciplinary exchange is necessary. Together with colleagues from various disciplines, Frommhold wants to set up a new professional association to improve treatment.
According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), there are currently no reliable numbers about how many patients there are in total. However, a study from Germany published in the specialist magazine “The Lancet” in July 2021 offers a clue: In the work on long-term effects after mild corona courses, it is said that around one in ten people with initially few or no symptoms even months after the acute illness still had symptoms such as difficulty breathing, insomnia, taste disturbance and tiredness.
The RKI also links to this study. According to Frommhold, the clinical picture could already affect up to 500,000 people in Germany.
From the point of view of Martin Scherer, President of the German Society for General Medicine and Family Medicine, the basic problem with corona long-term effects lies in the diagnosis: Without proof of a Covid infection through a positive PCR test or a notification from the health department, treatment is in practice hardly possible. According to him, this affects those who develop symptoms after a mild Covid course. (dpa)
