Since the virus appeared in late 2019, “Covid 19” infections have been detected among several types of animals, such as cats, dogs, lions and tigers, but they have not previously appeared in hyenas, which are known for their strong immunity.
After a number of zoo lions were infected with corona, veterinarians collected samples from a variety of animals, including hyenas, to discover that two of them were infected.
The two infected hyenas (22 and 23 years old) showed mild symptoms, including lethargy, coughing and some nasal secretions, but the zoo said in a statement that they were “in good health, and they are expected to make a full recovery.”
Researchers believe that animals can catch corona infection from humans, but based on the available information, the risk of the opposite happening is very low.
And the US Department of Agriculture recommended that people infected with the Corona virus avoid close contact with their animals, to protect them from possible infection.
Since its appearance, the Corona virus has been associated with bats, as theories prevailed that it originated in these animals in remote caves in China, and passed from them to humans.
