D.he nationwide seven-day incidence has again risen to a high. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Sunday morning as 372.7. For comparison: the previous day the value was 362.2, a week ago it was 289 (previous month: 85.6). The health authorities in Germany reported 42,727 new corona infections to the RKI within one day – 28 percent more than a week ago.
According to the new information, 75 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 55 deaths. The RKI has counted 5,354,942 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not recognized.
The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was given by the RKI on Friday as 5.34 (Thursday: 5.30). With the indicator it must be taken into account that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with delay. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.
Saxony remains a hotspot
There are still major regional differences in the infection rate. In eighteen counties, the seven-day incidence was over 1,000. Sixteen rural districts recorded an incidence value of less than 100. In Saxony the incidence is now well over 800. The RKI reported a specific value of 862.1 on Sunday. On Saturday, the incidence – the number of new infections reported per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – was 793.7. The Free State remains a nationwide Corona hotspot ahead of Bavaria (639.4) and Thuringia (628).

Five districts in Saxony have an incidence value of 1000. The district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains is still the most severely affected with an incidence of 1618.6. This is followed by the districts of Bautzen (1336.2), Meißen (1201.9), Northern Saxony (1195.3) and the Erzgebirgskreis (1103.6). The RKI once again reported the lowest incidence for the state capital Dresden (448.4).
The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered nationwide as 4,626,300. The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 99,062.
Spahn takes a defensive stance
The acting Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn defended the much-criticized limitation of order quantities for BioNTech’s corona vaccine. “I know that this short-term change means a lot of additional stress for many committed helpers on site in the doctor’s offices and vaccination centers. And I expressly regret that, ”said the CDU politician to the German press agency on Saturday. The demand for BioNTech has risen so strongly in the last two weeks that the warehouse is empty very quickly. In the new week alone, almost six million doses would be delivered to the vaccinating agencies. That is more than there has ever been in Germany in terms of booster vaccinations.
An overview of vaccine deliveries by the Ministry of Health also shows that Germany is expected to donate or has donated almost 8.8 million doses of BioNTech to third countries via the Covax initiative this month.
With BioNTech and Moderna there are two excellent and highly effective vaccines. There are enough of both to vaccinate 50 million people by the end of the year, said Spahn. “I can promise that anyone who wants to get vaccinated will get a good, safe and effective vaccine.” In some studies on the effects of booster vaccinations, a third vaccination with Moderna even performed better than one with BioNTech.
