On Wednesday, demonstrators used violence and irritant gas to attack officials at the Corona demonstration in Berlin’s government district. The police chief complains: Berlin has not experienced anything like this for decades.
B.According to the police, emergency services were massively attacked during the demonstration against the Corona policy on Wednesday in Berlin. There were 77 injured police officers and 365 arrests, the police reported on Thursday evening in a preliminary balance sheet on the protests in Berlin-Mitte.
“The potential and brutality of the violence on Wednesday was immense. Individual voices have told me that we have not seen anything like this in Berlin for decades, ”said police chief Barbara Slowik to the“ Tagesspiegel ”.
Individual groups attacked the emergency services massively, as the police announced. Protesters tried to pull the helmets off police officers’ heads. Some emergency services had their visors torn up and irritant gas was sprayed on their faces. Bottles, stones and pyrotechnics were flown to the emergency services.
Proceedings initiated due to serious breach of the peace
In addition, around 40 hooligans tried to break barriers to get in the direction of the Reichstag building. Here the emergency services would have used irritant gas. Policemen were also pelted with chairs and tables in front of bars. The police initiated 257 criminal investigations, some of them for serious breaches of the peace and attempted release of prisoners.
“We have moved away from the very colorful audience and are increasingly dealing with a spectrum of people who generally reject our system and are ready to use extreme violence for it,” said Sowik.
Since the demonstrators violated the hygiene requirements in view of the corona pandemic, the police ordered the dissolution of the meeting. Finally, water cannons were used several times because the participants did not want to leave.
“But we deliberately only let it rain to make people uncomfortable,” said Slowik. “The water cannon is a resource that we use very sensitively.”
In the plenum of the Bundestag on Wednesday the state measures to protect the population in the corona pandemic were discussed. The police had therefore cordoned off the area extensively.
According to the police on Thursday, around 9,000 people gathered at the Brandenburg Gate to protest against the corona policy. On Wednesday, a spokeswoman spoke to around 7,000 people. According to the police, around 2500 emergency services attended the protests.
