In its weekly assessment of the pandemic, issued Thursday, the organization announced 8,700 deaths from “Covid 19” last week, with a jump of 21 percent in the Americas, and an increase of 17 percent in the western Pacific.
And the World Health Organization added that cases of coronavirus infection continue to decline, as it recorded about 3.2 million new cases last week, which increases the decline in infections since its peak last January.
However, significant spikes in infection occurred in some regions, with the Middle East and Southeast Asia recording increases of 58 and 33 percent, respectively.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said earlier this week: “As many countries have reduced surveillance and testing, we know that this number has not been adequately reported. There is no acceptable level of deaths from the virus given that the global community has Now vaccines, medicines and diagnostics to stop the spread of the virus.”
While many wealthy countries in Europe and North America have dropped most restrictions related to the virus, China’s strict virus policies mean more mass testing and quarantines, and the isolation of anyone who has been in contact with infected people.
