The fourth corona wave has started in Austria. The number of new infections has been at a record high since May. The media report a gloomy forecast.
Vienna – The neighboring country of Austria has always been one step ahead of Germany since the beginning of the corona pandemic – with an emergency brake, lockdown or the so-called 3-G rule. The fourth corona wave has officially begun there a long time ago. Even the Austrian Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) recently admitted this. And the numbers will continue to rise in the Alpine republic.
Corona in Austria: worst-case scenario for September 2021
A worrying trend is emerging in the Alpine republic. As oe24.at reported, there is a “brand new forecast report” from Gesundheit Österreich and Med Uni Wien. “The secret Corona report” – is the headline of the news portal.
The gloomy Corona forecast assumes that new infections will continue to skyrocket by August 25 and the incidence in Austria will rise to just below the 100 limit. According to the forecast experts, this value will increase the most in the capital Vienna – to 129. In Salzburg and Vorarlberg, too, the incidence will be 100 in the coming week.
According to the report, the number of unreported cases of infection is likely to be significantly higher. This could have an impact on the number of Covid 19 patients in intensive care units in Austria. In the opinion of experts, the value should therefore increase significantly in September. The forecast experts expect the number of intensive care patients to double soon. The ORF can read of a “worst case scenario”. On September 1, there should be 151 patients in intensive care beds. The country is still a long way from having more than 600 occupied beds as in April.
The situation in the intensive care units is still stable. But that can change quickly. Young people in particular become infected, but the curve is also increasingly pointing upwards in the older age groups.
Corona numbers are exploding: Austria is sticking to its “3-G rule”
It is initially unclear what consequences the forecast paper will actually have for Austria. Austria is extremely loose with its corona rules compared to Germany. The so-called 3-G rule (vaccinated, tested or recovered) applies in restaurants and at events. In places – for example in restaurants – where the 3-G rule applies, there is no longer a mask requirement. Since this week (August 15), the proof of vaccination is only valid when proof of a complete vaccination *.
Austria: The most important corona rules
- No minimum distance to other people.
- Mask compulsory only in supermarkets, petrol stations, public transport or mountain railways. Only Vienna makes an exception here.
- In restaurants there is no longer a minimum distance between two groups of guests
Corona: Austria will have the “1-G rule” from autumn
The 3-G rule has been in effect since mid-May and has been extended to September 30th. The current event rule until September 17th. Events of 100 people or more are therefore notifiable, and a prevention concept must be submitted for 500 or more participants. But Austria is thinking about restrictions for unvaccinated people from autumn, especially at the events.
“I believe that before an increasingly precarious epidemiological situation in autumn we have to talk about ‘1-G’ and I can well imagine that in October,” said Austrian Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens).
In Austria, the number of corona infections has been increasing significantly for days. At the beginning of this week, 1,267 new corona infections were recorded. The highest value in summer 2021. The infection rate is also reflected in the 7-day incidence. The value in Austria is currently 73.8. The highest incidence since May. For comparison: 37.5 were reported at the beginning of August.
The pressure on unvaccinated people in Austria is growing. A café in an Austrian tourist resort only serves the unvaccinated – the mayor and the city try to deal with it in their own way. (ml) * Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
