In recent days the Red Bull he had decided to challenge his own right of revision on the penalty imposed on Lewis Hamilton for the accident he had with Max Verstappen during the first lap of Silverstone. The Anglo-Austrian team asked for a tightening of the sanction, sure to bring in front of the men of the Federation new evidence that would change the perspective on the accident it had up to that moment. This did not happen and the Commissioners considered the material brought by Red Bull (a mix of GPS data, simulator laps and an Albon lap on the English track) already known or created specifically for the case and therefore not considered. In particular, the ‘physical’ use of test driver Albon to replicate the lines held by Hamilton during the accident aroused curiosity, with the Anglo-Thai driver who went on track at Silverstone for a private test with a car from two seasons ago, the RB15 of 2019. Red Bull’s thesis aimed to prove that Hamilton could have taken his foot off the accelerator earlier, to avoid contact.
Mercedes defended itself, highlighting how the Albon lap was not very representative, precisely because it was done with a two-year old single-seater and because it was fitted with demonstration tires. In addition, Toto Wolff’s men had prepared a rejoinder to the GPS data that Red Bull was rumored to be preparing, bringing in turn some measurements of the positioning on the track. And these added further details to the trial – although the GPS data were all already available to the Commissioners at the time of the penalty. The trio of sporting director Ron Meadows, chief engineer Andrew Shovlin and director of strategy James Vowles showed how Verstappen entered the Copse with 1 km / h faster than in his best qualifying lap. A detail not to be overlooked – according to the Silver Arrows – also because it is made with tires of a harder compound and with a full tank.
Revealing Mercedes’ position in Thursday’s hearing was the online edition of Auto Motor und Sport, who defined that of the Lewis Hamilton team “a double win“.
