The 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) opened its formal sessions this Sunday (31) in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, with an appeal to keep alive the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5ºC.

At the time of the transfer of the presidency to the British Alok Sharma, the Chilean Carolina Schmidt, president of COP25, addressed the leaders of the participating nations, calling for them to “accomplish the signed agreements”. “We know that tackling climate change requires a transverse transformation of our development,” she said in her speech to delegates representing their countries in the British city.

“We cannot rewrite the Paris Agreement, we have to comply with it,” added the Chilean at the start of COP26, referring to the pact signed in 2015 by which nations pledged to keep the increase in global temperature in this century below 2 degrees Celsius above industrial pre-levels, and continue efforts to further limit this increase to 1.5ºC.
