The boats were concentrated next to the Isla del Ciervo, a protected area for birds
The concentration of several dozen boats next to the Isla del Ciervo brings the controversy back to the Mar Menor and to the conditions for its conservation. At that point of the coast, a concert was held last Saturday at 8:30 p.m., which ended up being attended by more than 50 boats, as can be seen in the photographs published on social networks, most of them recreational, which anchored without permission in area.
One of the boats that came to the concert was that of the Flippa Boat company, whose partner, Diego Paredes, assures LA TRUTH that he was unaware that it was an illegal party. “We could have gone to any other place, as we do every day, but we saw that the concert was taking place and we wanted to give people who do not have a private boat the opportunity to get closer,” he says. Paredes indicates that last year there was also a concert for the same dates in the area, but that it was not as massive as the one this weekend. On the other hand, from the company they emphasize that they have all the permits in force and that they have already contacted the Maritime Captaincy to collaborate with them.
This massive anchoring has received criticism from groups in defense of the salty lagoon, such as SOS Mar Menor, who recalled that the island is within the protection zone for birds (ZEPA) and that it contains endemic plant species. “We insist again: the Mar Menor does not admit more pressure,” they point out from the group, while emphasizing the lack of environmental awareness to save this sensitive area: “We do not care about anything, we are going to kill everything.”
The celebration of this concentration was also censored by the spokeswoman for Podemos in the Regional Assembly, María Marín, who pointed out that “the images of this weekend speak for themselves” and “shame the entire Region of Murcia.” The regional deputy also recalled that it is “totally prohibited for ships to be anchored in the Mar Menor due to the high impact this generates on the seabed, in addition to the noise and garbage left behind.” Given these facts, from Podemos they demanded the withdrawal of the license from the company organizing the event on Isla del Ciervo, as well as guarantees that “an act of these characteristics will not be authorized again in the area.
The coordinator of More Region, Óscar Urralburu, also criticized the holding of this event through his Twitter account, and claimed both the Cartagena City Council and the regional government for their responsibility in “this new nonsense.”
