At the Sandro Pertini hospital in Rome, Italy, the tragedy that occurred on January 8 was known, when a baby who was just born on January 5 died on the third day because his mother, exhausted for more than 17 hours of childbirth and constant attention to the neonate, she fell asleep while breastfeeding him, and when she woke up she had already disappeared.

The father, who blames the hospital for negligence and lack of care for the mother and her son, says that “when they took -the baby- out of bed, they didn’t even wake her up, she was alone, she opened her eyes and our son was already was not”.
My partner asked several times for our son to be taken to the newborn nest, so that he could rest for a few hours.
What was a moment of extreme happiness, turned into a nightmare for an Italian family at the Sandro Pertini hospital, when their three-day-old baby died of suffocation, caused by his mother falling asleep while breastfeeding him.
The baby’s father reconstructs the facts, demanding an explanation. “My partner was exhausted. She had spent 17 hours to give birth. He was not standing. The baby was brought to bed for her to nurse. They also demanded that she change the diaper herself.”

In addition, he adds that the mother “He asked several times that our son be taken to the newborn nest, so that he could rest for a few hours, but the staff always refused. Exhausted, she fell asleep. When she opened her eyes again, our son was gone, they had already taken him away.
The hospital protocol for the care of newborns and their mothers establishes that the health personnel must be in constant attention to the patients; in addition, prohibits newborns from sleeping in the same bed as mothers precisely to avoid this type of cases, which is considered one of the main causes of death in newborn babies.
When they took -the baby- out of bed, they didn’t even wake her up, she was alone, she opened her eyes and our son was no longer there
These reasons are the ones argued by the father of the deceased minor, who blames the hospital for the death of his son. She only held him twice before she died, once at birth on January 5th, and the second on January 7th for just one hour.

The father recounts that his partner “was left alone all the time; with the covid regulations, none of us could be by his side. And she, although she is 29 years old, was very exhausted, the little one was restless, he never let her sleep, so I spent the nights without sleeping a wink. But my son was fineapparently he was completely healthy.”
The death of the infant was declared at 1:40 am on January 8, and the father was not present at the time of death, he found out from a call he received from his mother.
“It was my partner who called me on the phone, asking me to run to the hospital, but my son no longer existed (…) When they took -the baby- from the bed, they didn’t even wake her up -says the man-, she was Alone, she opened her eyes and our son was gone”

Several patients at the Sandro Pertini hospital have similar experiences of poor care by health personnel. “Alone and abandoned, what happened at Pertini could have happened to anyone” tells a woman to the Italian outlet ‘Il Messaggero’
“Now we are waiting to know the result of the autopsy” says the father. “We have entrusted the case to a lawyer. In fact, the exact cause of death is still unknown and we still don’t have many answers.” On the other hand, the Rome Prosecutor’s Office also opened an investigation into the case.
What does the hospital say?
Giuseppe Gambale, director of the Sandro Pertini hospital, says that he has made everything necessary for a thorough investigation available to the lawyers and the authorities. Nevertheless, denies that the hospital forced the mother to be with the baby at all times.
The police, lawyers, prosecutors and the hospital will then determine the reason why the baby slept with the mother, a procedure that is prohibited by the same health centerwhich establishes that the staff is responsible for moving the newborn to its own crib when the mother finishes breastfeeding.

For her part, prosecutor Sabrina Calabretta seeks to determine whether the woman was also administered medication or sedatives during her hospital stay, which may have led to less surveillance as a side effect. The mother underwent a toxicological test.
The parents hope that justice will be done and that their case will serve as an example for greater precaution on the part of hospitals and greater care for mothers and their children so that “similar tragedies do not occur.”
