A scandal broke out this week in the United States after a watchdog revealed that FBI agents used unauthorized “provocative” photographs of their non-agent employees as a bait to attract sex offenders on social media.
As revealed by CNN, the report of the general inspection of the Department of Justice maintains that “sometimes they used photographs of young female employees from support staff to impersonate underage children or sex workers to attract sexual predators on various social media websites. “
Law enforcement agencies often send employees out in the open to catch criminals. But the women in these photos they were not authorized to participate in covert operations.
The FBI agents who released the photos also did not obtain written permission or notify their supervisors, according to the report, likely because there was no policy that required that to happen.
The women were dressed in the photos and their faces were blurred. Y there is no indication that women did not know that your photos would be posted. But the complaint claims that the photos may still be circulating and that the women are now at risk of becoming victims of crime.
Investigators said they discovered the practice while investigating an FBI agent who allegedly had a “inappropriate relationship” with a co-worker.
“He asked her to send “provocative images” to use in the undercover operation of sex trafficking on the networks, despite the fact that she was an employee of the office, and not a law enforcement officer who was authorized to perform undercover work, “the brief says.
The FBI apparently does not have a policy on the use of undisclosed employee photos in situations like these.
There is no requirement on the books that employees in this situation need to be notified if their photos were used, on which websites they were published and for how long.
The watchdog recommended that the FBI establish a policy to obtain consent and notify managers in cases like these.
In response to the report, a senior FBI official said the office “fully accepts “the recommendation and teach the new rules to personnel involved in covert operations.
