It was a suicide by the Pd leadership group, committed against the will of its constituents, and moreover, it was an unassisted suicide, as in the amazing cartoon by Spinoza: “Marco Cappato goes to the barracks to report himself: ‘I accompanied Letta from Calenda ‘”. According to all the exit polls M5S and Pd could have won alone, without even needing the Third Pole.
But let’s proceed in order. While the numbers of the exit polls and screenings are still dancing (and will no doubt dance all night) some important verdicts are already clear.
The first: Giorgia Meloni wins, in a center-right where the two main allies, who in the previous lessons were majority shareholders, are emptied by the success of Fratelli d’Italia. You win, but with fewer votes than expected, with a coalition just over 42%.
Second: the center-left of the “restricted field” loses. This newspaper, in its small way, did not wait for tonight to tell you, but it told you about it a month ago, when the games were over, when suicide could still be avoided, and we interviewed all the main leaders of the party to ask them their opinion.
Enrico Letta’s first serious mistake was to cancel the wide field and weaken the center-left, facilitating Meloni’s race. This is said by the voters of the Democratic Party (many of whom voted “protest” by choosing Conte) not some radical commentator. And that this is the case with the landslides of these hours. But above all the fact that the center-left was not in the game and never was.
Second point: Giuseppe Conte won his challenge, after being underestimated by everyone, especially by the leaders of the Democratic Party. The men of the Nazarene openly said they consider the M5S “finished”, especially after the administrative vote. They did not understand, therefore, that Conte was not in the field in those elections. And another extraordinary gift was given to him by the one who organized a “dragon” split in the house. The farewell of Luigi Di Maio and of the other sixty parliamentarians to the Movement – paradoxically – was not a hemorrhagic as the newspapers wrote, but it will become part of the regeneration process of the new five stars.
Another point of analysis: electoral mobility, according to the first data, is within the individual fields. Not between one coalition and another. If even the wide field had lost 5 points along the way – therefore – because it assumed another configuration, it would have won the same.
Finally, a crucial point. Nicola Zingaretti had regenerated the image of the Democratic Party after the dramatic wound of Renzismo. He had transformed his party into the cornerstone of the Giallorossi alliance. Instead, in this campaign, the post-Christian, post-Renzian and post-communist leadership group of the Democratic Party, which unlike its constituents completely flattened on the government of the Palazzo, did everything to destroy that work and rebuilt the image of a presumptuous, self-referential and at times even arrogant elite.
The other horror of these elections was the Rosatellum: the writer has been saying it and repeating it for five years, TPI has raised many cries of alarm. It is a law that gives an unexpected majority to a mass minority: written by Matteo Renzi when he was convinced he had 40%. And as always happens, a law passed with a coup de hand, even imposing a vote of confidence (the last one who had done so was called Bonito Mussolini) affects those who voted for it thinking they were cheating others. Five years later, too.
Another important issue: even the CGIL, ignored and unheard had declared itself “not lined up in the vote”. Mistakes weighed – especially the economic field of the Draghi government – weighed by the lack of intervention on bills and the energy crisis, and by the lack of dialogue with the trade union on the crucial issue of pensions.
But one thing must be said about the debate on the left. Now they will blame all the defeat on Letta, trying to turn him into a scapegoat and instead the secretary had no critical opinion around him with the only exception of Goffredo Bettini, who in the decisive direction explained that it was true a harakiri . Letta’s suicide wasn’t one man’s choice. It was a choral mistake, the culmination of a piece of leadership unable to listen to its constituents. A chorus of conformists who did not breathe because they feared the lists, the exclusive prerogative – by virtue of the Rosatellum – of the current leader. Only Zingaretti and Francesco Boccia, while respecting the line, had expressed their preference for the wide field. He will remain out of parliament – very likely – Luigi di Maio. He takes a sliced Matteo Salvini and 10% which was the Umberto Bossi record).
But all the more reason – given this weakness – the biggest mistake of these elections was that of the center left, which can be summarized as follows, with the chaos of the agendas. The Democratic Party entered the electoral campaign holding the “Zelensky agenda” in one hand and the “Draghi agenda” in the other. He had to hastily abandon both of them, in the middle of his electoral trip.
The stance on the war broke the party’s deep relationship with its base, opposed to sending weapons to Ukraine. And perhaps the positive result of the red-green pole is also affected by this inexplicable distortion of the deeper identity code. The latest madness, then, was to keep Conte out using the lack of trust in Draghi as a pretext. But then allying himself with Fratoianni, the only proud opponent of the government, from the left. An incoherent and unexplainable double standard.
A schizophrenia that reached its epilogue in the surreal negotiation with Carlo Calenda. Sacrificing Conte, in fact, served Letta to recover with the centrists, but that sacrifice, as well as being wrong, was in vain. In fact, as is known, then Calenda broke the pact, buggered and betrayed Letta (after having even taken the usual photos) creating yet another break. This is why the latest product of this vote is a tear in leadership: Stefano Bonaccini is already in the bakery field, the congress of the Democratic Party has already begun.
