The new school year is just around the corner in the first federal states. The SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach warns urgently against starting school without Corona measures.
Berlin – Soon the first children in Germany will be packing their satchels again: It’s going to school! At least that’s the plan. On Monday the new school year starts in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein in attendance. The other federal states still have a few weeks to agree on the new Corona regulations for school operations. The first decisions have already been made.
The question of what restrictions will accompany students in the classroom after the summer vacation creates a heated debate. An expert should of course not be missing in discussions about children and Corona: The doctor and SPD politician Karl Lauterbach spoke up on Tuesday and warned in the Rheinische Post urgently to start the new school year without any corona measures.
Corona rules in schools: Lauterbach warns of “contamination of all students”
He had already heard from the federal states “of the idea of holding classes after the summer without any restrictions even with high incidences,” Lauterbach said in the Tuesday edition (July 27) of the newspaper. This is dangerous because a large number of children could become infected with the corona virus. “We would have a complete infection of all students by the end of the school year.”
It is unclear how many children have to struggle with long-term effects or a weaker immune system after a Covid 19 disease. If it were up to Karl Lauterbach, the federal states should stick to the tried and tested corona measures such as masks, tests, quarantine or alternating instruction. “In my opinion, vaccinating teenagers over the age of twelve can help a lot in overcoming the pandemic,” he said.
In the past, the SPD politician had repeatedly emphasized the possible dangers of a corona infection for children and adolescents. The doctor is particularly concerned about the risks of the highly contagious Delta variant, some of which are not yet foreseeable. He named Long Covid on Twitter on Friday as the most important reason for vaccinating children. Again and again he advocates vaccinations for children. (vs)
