A member of the British Conservative Party committee, which is overseeing the race to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson, said that the party will speed up the procedures for appointing a successor to Johnson.
The committee said that the number of contenders for the position will be reduced to two by July 20.
This came after a sixth candidate joined the race.
Next week, the party committee, called the 1922 Committee, will set the rules and competition schedule after Johnson resigns as party leader. Many members of Parliament are pressing for a quick succession to Johnson.
Today, Saturday, Transport Minister Grant Shapps and newly appointed Finance Minister Nazem Zahawi officially announced their candidacy for the position, bringing the number of candidates so far to six. However, more candidates are expected to apply for the position.
Conservative MPs will hold a series of ballots to reduce the number of candidates to two. After that, all party members will vote to choose a successor to Johnson from among the last two candidates left in the race.
