The “away goal” is now a thing of the past in South American football. As happened in Europe since last season, Conmebol confirmed that this rule will no longer apply from next year.
“CONMEBOL eliminates the“ away goal ”. From now on, all the goals of the CONMEBOL tournaments will have the same value; the many goals converted as a visitor will no longer be considered as a tie-breaking factor. With this, it points to greater sports justice”, Was the statement published on the networks.
This rule will be applied in the Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana, ending an important stage in soccer. The “away goal” started in 2005 and it was the idea of Bruno Caboclo, president of the CBF.
It all started because in 2004 there were eight definitions for penalties in the Copa Libertadores. Thanks to this measure, the matches began to be resolved in 180 minutes and penalties were considerably reduced.
On the other hand and unlike what many imagined, it is not expected that there will be modifications with the “single final” and it would follow the format that many criticize (especially after seeing what happened in the final of the South American Cup, with an empty stadium )
