US House of Representatives leaders said on Tuesday the chamber has decided to form a bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
The task force, made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats, will make recommendations for reforming relevant government agencies and will have subpoena power, according to a statement from Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
The US Secret Service has been under intense criticism since the July 13 assassination attempt on the former president during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
“The security failures that allowed the attempted assassination of Donald Trump are shocking,” Johnson said in a statement.
He added that the task force would move quickly “to ensure that such failures are not repeated.”
He explained that members of the House of Representatives will vote this week on a resolution to establish the working group and its members.
