Carabiniere Vittorio Iacovacci also died in last year’s ambush. Rocco Leone and Monsour Luguru Rwagaza. They would not have used “every suitable precaution to protect the physical integrity of the participants in the Pam mission that traveled the Rn2 road”
Almost a year after the murder of the Italian ambassador Luca Attanasio, the prosecutor of Rome puts a stop to the investigation. The deputy prosecutor Sergio Colaiocco has in fact closed the investigation, an act that anticipates the request for indictment, on two people.
Risking the trial for the murder of Attanasio and the carabiniere Vittorio Iacovacci – killed in Congo on 22 February last year in the Virunga park area by an armed group in an attempted kidnapping – are two employees of the World Food Program (Pam), accused of manslaughter. They are Rocco Leone and Monsour Luguru Rwagaza: the two were the organizers of the mission in the north of the African country. According to what was reconstructed by the investigators, the two employees of the Pam allegedly “omitted, due to negligence, imprudence and inexperience – it is written in a note from the Public Prosecutor -, according to the reconstruction carried out by the state, which is in line with the results of the internal investigation ‘UN, all appropriate caution to protect the physical integrity of the participants in the Pam mission that traveled the Rn2 road on which, in recent years, there had been at least twenty armed conflicts between criminal groups and the regular army “.
A first turning point came on January 19 when the news of 6 arrests, in relation to the murder, carried out by local authorities arrived from the Congo. The gang had been wanted for several months. After the attack on Attanasio on 22 February last year, several convoys were attacked throughout the region: in one, in November, a businessman from the area, Simba Ngezayo, was also killed. And it would have been the clues gathered during the investigation into this latest murder, according to Goma journalists, that put the North Kivu police on the trail of these three gangs. The kidnappers wanted to have $ 1 million in ransom in exchange for Attanasio, Congolese journalist Justin Kabumba reported on Twitter. In light of the arrests last January, the prosecutor immediately attempted to “acquire elements that allow the verification and careful evaluation of the investigative news coming from the Congo” in the context of the investigation into the murder. The prosecutors of Piazzale Clodio had then asked for official reports of the declarations made by the arrested in order to examine them and find any objective responsibility for what happened about a year ago. Furthermore, within the perimeter outlined by the two letters rogatory sent to Congo, work has begun to accelerate the mission of the Carabinieri del Ros in order to try to directly interrogate the arrested and support local investigators in the next steps of the investigations.
