The action will allow the creation of the first river beach in the municipality in Rincón de Beniscornia
The project to recover the river of always has no going back. Murcia City Council has obtained confirmation that it will receive around 1.7 million from Europe to execute the first phase of the ambitious project to recover the meanders of the Segura. These funds, coming from the Resilience Plan and channeled by the Biodiversity Foundation, will make it possible to carry out an action of two million euros in the surroundings of the Chico de Vivillo meander, in the Murcian district of Rincón de Beniscornia.
The project will make it possible to recover the original configuration of the river, modified by the flood plan of the 1980s, now that it has been concluded that the previous configuration is more suitable for cushioning possible floods. The hydraulic would be one of the three purposes of the proposal. The second is the recovery of biodiversity in the environment, repopulating adequate riparian vegetation and favoring the development of native fauna.
It is perhaps not the most important objective, but these actions will also allow citizens to recover a recreational environment, in a place frequented by cyclists and hikers, in which an access to the river will be opened and the first river beach of the municipality will be created, « something that is not easy to see in this low section of the Vega”, according to the Councilor for the Environment, Andrés Guerrero. However, the possibility of bathing will be subject to subsequent analyzes on the quality of the water or the drag force carried by the flow. If the meander is a disproportionate success as a recreation area among neighbors, the Consistory must consider measures to preserve the natural environment.
The project for the recovery of the meanders, developed by the University of Murcia, includes actions on three more, for which, for the moment, there are no deadlines or budget.
