Some 150,000 neighbors from five Catalan municipalities are confined in their homes for a fire unleashed this morning in a chemical factory for swimming pools in Vilanova I La Geltrú (Barcelona) that stores inside a seventy tons of chlorine.
Civil Protection of Catalunya has sent a message to the mobile phones of the residents of Vilanova I La Geltrú, Sant Pere de Ribes, and Cubelles (Barcelona), and Cunit and Calafell (Tarragona), as well as those of the Core of Roquetes, to ask them to be confined and do not go out to the street, open windows or doors.
Every outdoor event has also been suspended, such as markets or sports activities, in these municipalities.
As reported by the Bombers of the Generalitat, the fire is already in the stabilization phase and its propagation has been slowed to neighboring factories. Now the emergenic services work to follow the smoke column generated by the fire to determine their toxicity levels.
In the place of the fire some 60 troops of the Firefighters and personnel of the specialized group in technological risks work. They are not injured.
The traffic is cut on C-15 and C-31 roads at Vilanova for security reasons. Civil protection asks to avoid displacements in that area. In addition, the South R2 trains do not stop between Sitges and Sant Vicenç de Calders.
