The United States House of Representatives committee investigating the storming of the Capitol in January this year wants to bring Steve Bannon to trial for “contempt of Congress”. Which reports Reuters news agency Wednesday. The former adviser to former President Donald Trump was summoned by the committee last week to testify at a hearing on the events of January 6, but did not show up.
Bannon invoked this refusal on the so-called “executive privilege”, whereby a (former) president has the right not to share information with Congress. According to the committee, this rule does not apply to advisers to presidents.
According to the commission, Bannon would have been aware that violent protests would take place before the storming of the Capitol. The day before the storm, he said in his podcast that “all hell will break loose tomorrow”. The commission called Bannon’s refusal to testify “shocking” and accused him of “wanting to launder outrageous facts.” Commission chair Bennie Thompson also said that the commission will not be “deterred, distracted or held back” in the investigation and that all the facts will come out in any case.
The House of Representatives will vote on Thursday on the possible prosecution of Bannon. Democrats have a majority in the House, making it likely that the bill will pass. If approved, the Justice Department will start a criminal case against Bannon.
