Comment Would Lions Dare to Eye Ukraine?

Democracy and dictatorship, war and peace, as well as the right to exist in smaller states, will inevitably be played on Sunday in the Finland-Russia Olympic finals of hockey.

Here it is now.

In the Olympic hockey final in Beijing, China, on Sunday, the Lions, the Finnish national hockey team, and the Russian Olympic Committee team, the Russian national hockey team, will face each other.

Let me say that if a large-scale multi-frontal war breaks out in Europe this spring – or do you know it, in the worst days or in the next few weeks – Sunday’s Olympic final will be written in Finnish history books in the 2080s.

There are moments where the course of history thickens and darkens.

Right now it is like this: The stakes are higher than normal. Heads of state and generals make either wise and constructive or destructive and fatal decisions.

More than Olympic gold will be played on Sunday. At the level of meanings, one also plays about democracy and dictatorship, as well as war and peace, in which the Republic of Finland represents Tolstoy pacifism and the right to exist as smaller states.

Vladimir Putin is an obsessive stutterer, a supporter of the SKA in St. Petersburg, and a stubbornly moving central striker in the Kremlin ‘s disgraceful propaganda matches, often number 11. He will be staring from the start of Sunday’ s match, whatever the situation on Ukraine ‘s borders.

Neither the International Hockey Community nor the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have been de facto champions of the human rights struggle or the statutory international order. Almost the opposite. Swiss, newly retired former chairman of the International Hockey Federation and member of the IOC Board René Fasel known as the supreme friend of the dictators of Russia and Belarus, who has been willing to put all his weight into the game for his despot friends.

The sight has been embarrassing. It has been a sacred principle for Fasel that politics does not belong to the top hockey – except in those exceptional cases where politics has driven systems that crumble Western liberal democracy. The same is sadly true of the Jokers in Helsinki, who Hjallis Harkimo took Russia to the KHL League in 2014, which was politicized and directly linked to the Kremlin’s economic powers.

But hockey bosses don’t decide what meanings to load for matches in home stands. Nor do they decide what meanings players and teams place on them.

On Sunday it is also played out in world political struggles, completely regardless of the opinion of the International Olympic Committee, the Finnish Olympic Committee or the Russian Olympic Committee. The final match simply hits an extremely charged seam. On Friday, it was estimated that the total number of Russian troops on the borders with Ukraine was as high as 170,000 to 190,000 heavily equipped soldiers.

There is a genuine fear that Russia will expand the status war in eastern Ukraine into a full-fledged multi-front assault deep into the heart of Ukraine. If this happens, there may be the worst slaughter in Europe since 1945. The number of victims would inevitably increase to a crushing rate. Ukrainians would experience and other Europeans would see shocking events over the generations.

The spread of war and unrest outside Ukraine could not be forgotten.

Ten over six on Sunday morning, the final opening disc will drop to ice.

It is unreasonable to think that European peace work would be on the shoulders of individual Finnish players. Instead, it is on the shoulders of every sane European. Still, on Sunday, Lions and Finland would have the opportunity to take a sublime symbolic step and make a small wink to Ukraine, to peace, to democracy and to the right of smaller states to exist.

Sports teams have always communicated visually as well. Lions have used black mourning ribbons on a few occasions in championships, such as the immediate president Mauno Koiviston after death.

There is hardly a need for the mourning tape of the Great War on Sunday, but it is always appropriate to show solidarity. All you have to do is hit the face with a wet cloth, but you can make it subtle, for those who care about it.

Could the Lions Maintenance Team wrap half of the yellow insulating tape – and the other half of the blue – in the blades of the lions’ club?
