Columns Which bakery pie do you choose if you want to avoid food poisoning?

Let’s take it a small game of thought.

You are stuck in a city where there is a shortage of food. In fact, the shortage is so severe that nothing but pies are available to eat.

These pies are made by two competing bakeries, Bakery Bakery and Bakery Vaaka. Unfortunately, neither bakery is particularly precise in their work. Either can get food poisoning and end up in the hospital.

Of those who ate Vuoka’s pie, 20 unhappy people end up in hospital every day, and ten of those who ate Vaa’an pies. So quickly think, it would be an inch to go to the bakery in Vaaka for shopping. Pretty easy choice, right?

Before however, the first bite is worth considering the bakeries a little more closely. Bakery Vuoka is a huge facility that saves 10,000 pies from its ovens every day. Libra, on the other hand, is a small home bakery that spins only a hundred pies a day.

So which one should you choose? Although there are more people in the Libra pie a day, the probability of food poisoning from their pie is 0.2 percent. In the case of scales, the proportion is 10 per cent. So which pie are you grabbing?

Like surely you guessed it, a thought game is an analogy to a vaccine. Bread pie means taking the vaccine, Libra pie not taking the vaccine.

According to preliminary statistics from the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), 97 of those who were completely unvaccinated died in January, while 222 of those who were completely vaccinated died.

That is, more than twice as many people died as vaccinated.

Here, however, we must look at the ratios. There were 4.1 million people over the age of 12 who received the full vaccine series in January. There were about 600,000 unvaccinated people.

For every 100,000 vaccinated, 5.4 Finns died. Unvaccinated died per 16,000.

The risk of death was thus more than three times higher in the unvaccinated population.

Again, this comparison does not reach the full difference. THL records as corona deaths all deaths that occurred within 30 days of a positive corona result. So there are also people who have died of cancer or a heart attack, for example. These deaths are not affected by the vaccine.

Because there are far more vaccinated than non-vaccinated, there are inevitably more misdeclared deaths in a larger group.

Is of course, your own choice of which pie to grab. However, if you want to avoid being hospitalized, the choice is obvious.
