The fast charging columns, to speed up the ‘full’ of electric cars, they are arriving in Europe with ever increasing numbers. But obviously they are still not very widespread compared to traditional columns. According to data provided by ACEA, the association of European car manufacturers, in the EU, only 1 out of nine columns would be of the fast type.
ACEA declares that the latest figures are disappointing for those expecting the electric revolution: approximately 225 thousand charging points would be operational in the territory of the European Union, and only 25 thousand of these would have the advantages of fast charging technology. Not only: among the 200,000 points remaining in the account, many are very low-powered; which is why charging can be really slow and difficult for the motorist who chooses electric to organize. After all, many cities are dealing with houses that were not designed to have the best possible electrical output, having been built decades ago.
That there is no European management capable of maximizing the network and making it widespread, can be understood by observing the data (2020) from country to country. In the Netherlands, for example, there are over 66,000 charging points, but only 3.6% are fast charging. In Germany it rises to 16%, with 7,325 fast-charging stations. While in places like Lithuania the columns are very few (174 in all) but they are mostly fast. In Italy, according to these 2020 data, there are 11,842 columns of less than 22 kW, and 1,231 fast.
ACEA is clamoring for a commitment from politics, in order to make the columns as widespread as the petrol stations. “But the network is nowhere near reaching the goal,” said CEO Eric-Mark Huitema. “To get more citizens to switch to electricity, we need to eliminate all the problems associated with charging: people need to see many charging stations on their daily commute, and these charging points need to be fast and easy to use, without wasting time in long queues“.
