Columns Commanding is a sure way to kill a child’s passion for movement

Exercise becomes a habit only if the child sees his family moving with muscle power.

School children poor condition would work in the headlines under Christmas.

About 40 percent of 5th and 8th grade students are in worryingly poor physical condition, according to recent Move! Measurements score. Nationwide measurements survey, among other things, the endurance, speed, strength and mobility of schoolchildren.

It’s easy to be horrified that school-age children don’t move around enough. But what could you do as a parent to make your children move more?

Studies According to him, the most effective way is to move together with children, says university lecturer Arto Laukkanen from the Faculty of Sports Science at the University of Jyväskylä. She explores learning learning skills and interactions in families with children and in physical education.

So you have to put the skates on your foot, jump in the saddle of the bike or go to the yard to kick the ball. Modern life does not require much movement, and that is why it is worth showing children that they can also move from one place to another with muscular energy, Laukkanen points out. You can walk or bike to the store, school or a friend.

A touch of ingenuity is also needed. If the child is taken to school by car, it is not necessary to turn all the way to the door. The child can be left, for example, a kilometer from school, from where he walks for the rest of the journey, Laukkanen suggests. This is how a regular exercise supplement comes into play these days.

What about if you report your child to a nursery school or orienteering club?

The planting of exercise seeds cannot be outsourced, Laukkanen emphasizes.

“In time, a child or young person stops a hobby. Then he may lose his grip on the exercise if it has been externally organized. ”

According to Laukkanen, moving with the family primarily supports the children’s voluntary desire to move. When exercise becomes a habit, the idea does not have to be sold separately to the child.

Now those devices off and you go out to move, my voice, too, has risen to command the offspring that hangs in front of my cell phone.

However, you should choose words differently. Commanding is a sure way to kill the passion to move, 7–10-year-olds said in an interview study at the University of Jyväskylä.

“Exercise and being on digital devices should not be put together,” says Laukkanen.

Otherwise, the child may feel that exercise is a punishment.

Laukkanen’s tip is easy to implement: in the future, we will also agree on a certain time for digital devices and a certain amount of exercise.
